Small Town Excursions
Todos Santos
Todos Santos is located one hour north of Cabo San Lucas on Highway 19, halfway to La Paz, a small town is nestled in between the Sierra de la Laguna mountain range and the Pacific Ocean. It is a beautiful scenic drive from Cabo San Lucas up the Baja Peninsula along the coast and through the tropical vegetation. The town is an eclectic community of artisans and surfers. Enjoy its peaceful, laid back approach to life. It has retained its historical plaza and old town charm with more than a dozen small galleries and bookstores sprinkled among colorful cafes and storefronts. It is definitely not a place to miss!
La Paz
La Paz – meaning “Peace” – is on Mexico’s Baja Peninsula, the land immediately south of the United States, and cut off from mainland Mexico by the Sea of Cortez, also known as the Gulf of California. This region of Mexico is a real paradise with its hot deserts, breezy oceans and cool waters reflecting several different shades of blues and greens. La Paz still exhibits the old world charm of Mexico’s Baja region. The city is the state Capital of Baja California Sur, and there are four universities here which provide the city with plenty of cultural and academic events. No other town or city in Baja California Sur offers the range of medical facilities available in La Paz, so if you’re traveling in the region and need some medical assistance, La Paz is your best stop. La Paz is a mix of laid-back, old-world beauty and chichi upscale trends. It’s surprisingly international – you’re as likely to hear French, Portuguese or Italian here as English or Spanish, and yet paradoxically it’s the most “Mexicaná” city in all of Baja. Its quirky history includes American occupation and even being temporarily declared its own republic. The beachside malecón, superb restaurants and funky stores make it a great place to meander.
San Jose Del Cabo
With its 18th-century Spanish colonial architecture and laid-back local scene, San Jose del Cabo provides a low-key Baja Peninsula counterpart to fun-loving Cabo San Lucas 20 miles south. Scuba dive and kayak in Cabo Pulmo Marine Park, home to the Sea of Cortez’s only hard coral reef and the wreck of the fishing boat Colima. Visit the 200 bird species that live in the tranquil San Jose’s Estuary and Bird Sanctuary. Sunbathers will fall in love with Playa del Amore, one of Mexico’s best beaches.
